Factory of future is a topic of high interest today.

Factory of Future is often mentioned interchangeably with other topic like Smart Factory, Connected Factory, cyber-factory, lights-out factory and so on. There is agreement that this is a transformative concept, and falls with the ambit of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Topics of new trends in  manufacturing processes based on new technologies and innovative concepts of big data and AI/ML enter the picture.

 

The Factory of Future is the product of fast-changing disruptive technologies which are still evolving.  Convergence of Information technology and operational technology ( IT and OT ) are bringing forth new solutions, impact of which is difficult to foresee in full scale.

 

The technologies in form of products are available and even tested. Many solutions are implemented and tested -  as pilot projects. But just deployment as a pilot does not make a Factory of Future. So, why is there hesitation about scaling up ? A convincing business case for the full scale implementation project is not made out.

 

Impact of such project is not just technology. It needs a rethink in terms of people, processes, projects and of course technology. It must convince hard-headed finance people about overall benefits. The business case must be made out in full rigour.
